The Pre-school aims to provide learning
experiences through structured play opportunities for all the children in the group and with the involvement of the parents
in all aspects of the operation of the group. The Pre-school offers children a safe, satisfying and happy
place to play, learn and develop with children of the same age before going on to meet the demands of school. The Pre-school
is a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance (PLA).
The
day to day running of the Pre School is carried out by the two Supervisors and the four additional Foundation Stage
Practitioners. Over 50% of staff hold recognised child care qualifications and all regularly attend Professional
Development training days organised by the Wokingham Early Years team. Each member of staff has
had a Police (Criminal Records Bureau) and Health check and has signed a Non Discrimination Declaration as laid down
by Social Services.
The Pre-school staff plan and record the children's learning in accordance with the
Early Learning Goals for the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum both in drawing up the programme of activities each
term and throughout their daily interactions with the children.
The maximum number of
children at the Pre-school in any one session is 24 aged between 2 years 6 months and 5 years. No children
under the age of 2 years are allowed to stay with parent helpers during the session.
The
educational programme is flexible and responsive to the needs of the children. Children work in small groups on activities
related to the different areas of learning, with a high ratio of adults to children, promoting discussion and conversation
with the adults when working on the themed activities or enjoying free play.
Children work in key groups of mixed age ranges.
Key groups are given animal names; Lions, Elephants, Monkeys, Tigers and Giraffes and children quickly build an
attachment with their key person and the other children in their group. All key groups spend
part of each session participating in adult-led activities, the remainder of the session is spent interacting
with other children through free-play both indoors and outside in the garden.
A staff ratio operates of 1:6 Registered Staff:
Pre-school children. This does not include the presence of a parent helper at each session.
There are always at least two adults on duty and staffing ratios are maintained during outings. Sufficient staff are available for unexpected staff absences as staff work four mornings
per week and so are available for a fifth, if necessary. All staff records are stored at the Chairperson’s house, away
from any other person associated with the Pre-school.
When you first visit the Pre School you
will notice a calm and welcoming atmosphere. One of our proudest achievements is the creation of our garden and play area.
We have invested in an excellent out door play area. We have a selection of purpose built swings and slides, a road for our
bikes and buggies, sand pits and lots of space to run around. The garden is completely secure and away from main roads.
